Abstract

The Essentials of Religion and the Principles of Takfīr: An Usūlī Foundational Study on Distinguishing Definitive Matters from Juristic Issues

This research examines the concept of the essentials of religion (Ḍarūriyyāt al-Dīn) and their role in regulating the methodology of Takfīr (declaring disbelief) through an analytical study based on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (Uṣūl al-Fiqh) and the approaches of classical Muslim scholars.

The significance of this study arises from the critical nature of Takfīr, as it represents one of the most sensitive judgments in Islamic theology and law. Classical scholars therefore established precise methodological principles to prevent both negligence in preserving the fundamental beliefs of Islam and excessive expansion in declaring individuals or groups outside the faith. One of the major causes of imbalance in this field is the failure to distinguish between definitive matters (qaṭʿiyyāt) and juristic issues (masāʾil ijtihādiyyah), as well as between rejection of revelation and differences arising from interpretation, ignorance, or scholarly reasoning.

The study aims to clarify the meaning and criteria of the essentials of religion, examine their relationship with certainty (qaṭʿ), necessary knowledge (ʿilm ḍarūrī), and the hierarchy of religious evidences, and analyze their impact on the principles governing Takfīr. It also investigates the role of ignorance, interpretation (taʾwīl), and legitimate disagreement in evaluating theological and legal positions.

The research adopts an inductive and analytical methodology by examining classical sources in Islamic theology and jurisprudence, including works such as Sharḥ al-Maqāṣid by al-Taftāzānī, Sharḥ al-Fiqh al-Akbar by Mullā ʿAlī al-Qārī, al-Manār fī Uṣūl al-Fiqh by al-Nasafī, Uṣūl al-Bazdawī, Radd al-Muḥtār by Ibn ʿĀbidīn, and other authoritative works.

The study concludes that Takfīr is not based merely on disagreement or violation of a religious ruling; rather, it requires the denial of a matter that is established with certainty and recognized as necessarily belonging to Islam, along with the fulfillment of the required conditions and the absence of relevant impediments. Furthermore, distinguishing between the rejection of essential religious principles and legitimate interpretative or juristic disagreement is a fundamental safeguard for maintaining methodological balance in Islamic theological discourse.
